Ornamental fences installed in the city of Chaska must be completely within private property boundaries. If building a fence on a shared property boundary, you’ll need your neighbor’s permission. When your property would block access to an easement in the city of Chaska, the fence perimeter must be appropriately adjusted.

It’s not strictly necessary unless you are building a joint fence with them or if installation requires using their property for some reason. However, we’ve never had a situation when it wasn’t advantageous, for the homeowners and our installation crew, to let them know, and we encourage doing so.

The city of Chaska requires a permit, and to get one you must show a fence plan along with a material description. You also must verify the location is within your own property boundaries.

We call Gopher State One on your behalf to conduct any utility surveys. You won’t have to lift a finger – except to design your new ornamental fence, of course. Rear yards must be under 6 feet, and the limit is 4 feet in front yards (which the city of Chaska wants to be under 50% opacity). See the section on the codes and ordinances above for further information on municipal regulations.

Most jurisdictions prohibit building fences on easements within their boundaries, even if they are within the boundaries of the homeowner’s property. As explained in their permit, the city of Chaska allows this to be done, but with the liability to move it at one’s own expense if access to it is required. It’s probably best just to avoid it, if at all possible.
