The longer answer is that whether you need a permit before you begin installing ornamental fence panels will depend on your plans. If your fence is under seven feet tall, you will not need to obtain a permit before proceeding with your ornamental fence installation.

If your plans call for ornamental steel fencing, an ornamental aluminum fence, or an ornamental iron fence that is seven feet tall or higher, you will need a permit first. If you’re installing your own ornamental fence (whether that be an ornamental iron fence, an ornamental aluminum fence, or some ornamental steel fencing), this is something you’d have to take care of for yourself.

In general, if you plan to install a fence that is over 7 feet high, you will need to apply for a permit and get approval for the height of your ornamental metal fence.

Special height restrictions do apply for corner lots near paved intersections, however. Fences installed on such properties cannot exceed 2.5 feet in height.

Technically, you can build your ornamental aluminum fence, ornamental iron fence, or ornamental steel fencing on an easement if the easement does not contain public utilities or improvements.
