You need to consider where you can install your fence and where you can’t. For example, you can install it on your property line. However, your fence can’t sit on any overground or underground utilities. It also can’t block public easements, such as a sidewalk.

There are no laws that say you need to, but it would be nice to let them know. It builds a positive rapport with your neighbors, and may even open up new avenues of communication.

If the vinyl fence is taller than six feet, you’ll need a building permit. You can obtain a permit by submitting a completed application to your city’s planning and development office.

Height restrictions vary in Minneapolis. For example, your backyard fence can be as high as eight feet. But, if your neighbor’s home is within five feet of the property line, the maximum height can only be six feet. Likewise, a fence in the front yard can be four feet tall if it’s 60 percent or less solid. However, if it’s more than 60 percent solid, the maximum height is 36 inches.

It’s important not to block easements because they give the city or county access to water meters or power boxes. You also don’t want to accidentally put your vinyl fence on a neighbor’s property.
