You can build your fence on your property anywhere you like. Just know where your property boundaries are so you don’t encroach on any neighboring property. If you don’t know where your property line begins and ends, you should consider hiring a surveyor to mark it. You can place your fence right on the lot line. In Arden Hills, the finished side of the fence always faces out.

Legally, you’re not required to notify your neighbors if you’re installing a fence on your property. However, it is courteous to let your neighbors know what your plans are. Some neighbors may even decide to share the installation costs of the fencing, which would require a written agreement between both of you. If your subdivision has an association covenant, checking with the committee before installing a fence would be prudent as there may be restrictions on type and style.

Permits are required for all fencing 7 feet above grade. If fences are under 7 feet tall, no permit is required. Northland Fence will call Gopher State One to schedule and mark all utility lines before installation. Corner lot fences must not impede clear vision or traffic line of sight.

Fences may not be over 6 feet tall if installed in a rear or a side yard. Any fence in the front of your property cannot exceed 3 feet high. If you have a shoreline lot, fencing cannot be closer than 25 feet from the ordinary high water line.

You cannot build a fence on an easement. Residential easements are legal land agreements between homeowners and the City of Arden Hills and must remain accessible. Easements often contain utility lines and building a fence on an easement may impede both driver and pedestrian sight lines, especially around corners.
