Is Your Fence Up to Code?

Columbia Heights, like every other city in Minnesota, has its own set of construction ordinances and restrictions. Hire the specialists at Northland Fence to save you time and hassle with permit requests. Our team is up to date on all height requirements, material restrictions, and utility safety.

WHERE CAN I PLACE MY FENCE ON THE PROPERTY?

Homeowners are strictly responsible for knowing the boundaries of their property. Fences are only allowed to be assembled within those lines. Fences cannot obstruct public rights of way like alleyways or public sidewalks, traffic visibility, or utility easements such as utility poles or hydrants. If multiple neighbors sign an agreement, fences may be built on property lines.

Here at Northland Fence, we can help plot your fence boundary based on your specific property. You are welcome to use our fence planning tool at your leisure.

AM I REQUIRED TO NOTIFY MY NEXT-DOOR NEIGHBORS?

In Columbia Heights, neighbors only need to be alerted if you plan to enter their property during the construction process. Otherwise, there is not a legal obligation to inform your neighbors of any new fence construction. However, it’s still common courtesy to let them know. Nobody likes being surprised by the sound of nearby construction. This is especially true if they have young kids or pets.

WHAT PERMITS DO I NEED FOR A NEW FENCE IN COLUMBIA HEIGHTS?

Like all ordinances in Minnesota, Columbia Heights has its own permit requirements. Fences under six feet in height do not require any permit, but all fencing codes must still be strictly followed. Fences between six and seven feet require a Conditional Use Permit, which is only issued by the Planning and Zoning Board. Our team is familiar with this application process should it be necessary for your project.

WHAT ABOUT THE UTILITY LINES?

For every construction project in Minnesota, Gopher State One must be called first, regardless of who is doing the installation. Gopher State One is in charge of locating subterranean utility lines such as gas, electricity, plumbing, and data. Northland Fence will deal with Gopher State One on your behalf, so you won’t have to do anything additional. Gopher State One must be contacted directly by DIY installers. Utility line damage is both dangerous and costly.

ARE THERE ANY HEIGHT RESTRICTIONS ON FENCES IN COLUMBIA HEIGHTS, MN?

Columbia Heights strictly mandates that no fence can exceed 7 feet. There are additional restrictions for front and side yard fences. Front and side yard fences may not exceed 42 inches, unless they are 50% opaque, in which case they may go up to 48 inches. Exceptions may be made in the case of retaining walls and terraces, both of which require additional permits.

CAN I BUILD MY FENCE ON AN EASEMENT?

The blocking of easements is not permitted in Columbia Heights under any circumstances. Access to utility poles, walkways, fire hydrants, and alleyways must be preserved with any new fence.

ARE THERE ANY MATERIAL OR DESIGN RESTRICTIONS?

Columbia Heights permits a variety of fencing materials. These include galvanized chain link, vinyl chain link, authorized permanent vinyl, wood-treated fencing, and natural wood fencing so long as it’s resistant to decay.

Columbia Heights prohibits barbed wire fencing as well as any reused fencing material.
