Your ornamental steel fencing, ornamental aluminum fence, or ornamental iron fence can be placed anywhere in your yard or adjacent to a lot line. It is, however, your responsibility to determine where the property line lies before you install any ornamental fence panels.

The codes state that posts must be placed along the inside of the fence and that the “more finished” side of the fence must face outward; however, neither of these requirements apply to ornamental fence installations.

While it is not required by law that you clear your plans with your neighbors, being a good neighbor sometimes involves discussing your plans with the homeowners around you. This can help you get ahead of any concerns or potential misunderstandings they might have and ensure smooth sailing when installation day arrives.

In most cases, building a fence in St. Paul, MN, does require a permit.

You must complete a “Fence Plan Review” (this is your permit application form), submit a basic site plan that outlines the placement of your fence, and pay the appropriate fees.

In addition, if you own a corner lot with two intersecting streets, your fence must meet certain standards so as not to block the view of vehicles approaching/crossing the intersection.
