Yes. In Oakdale, you are required to obtain a building permit in compliance with Oakdale Ordinance Chapter 25, Article 18, Section 25-159. Visit the Oakdale Building Department or download the permit application online. You’ll need to fill it out and submit it with a site plan and any other relevant information as required by the type and height of the fence you are having installed. In addition to the total vinyl fence cost, be prepared to pay a $40.00 permit fee for fences up to six feet tall and $50.00 for fences over 6 feet. In both cases, a $6.00 fire surcharge also applies.

If you are installing fencing yourself, you are responsible for having your utilities marked. For any excavation that takes place on your property, please contact Gopher State One Call at least 48 hours before your project start date, excluding holidays and weekends. Keep in mind that private utilities, such as underground electrical lines to outbuildings and plumbing for swimming pools will need to be marked by a private utility locator.

Oakdale’s residential building codes limit the height of residential boundary fencing to eight feet. Front yard fencing can be no higher than four feet tall.

It is best to avoid fencing utility easements. The City of Oakdale is not responsible for any damage that may result from accessing a blocked easement.
